If it’s time to sell that old family car and look into buying something will a bit less mileage, then Craiglist may be the way to go. There are certainly other avenues to go such as the newspaper or even word of mouth; however, it is becoming more and more popular to sell cars on Craigslist. Many people have asked why I have had so much success, so I decided to put a list together with some pointers that will hopefully give you the best chance to sell you car.
• First and foremost, make sure to learn all of the laws regarding car sales in your area. There are things to understand such as how to transfer registration, pink slips, taxes, and more. The best place to find that info is on your local DMV’s website.
• Check out the other listings and see what your car sells for on average relative to the current condition of your car. You can use resources such as BlueBook, eBay Motors, and other listings.
• Arrange all of the paper work for your car before you list it. You will most likely get calls with questions about this information. Better to be prepared! Some of the important documents to have are the title, insurance, servicing records, purchase statement, and any other information you have on hand.
• Is your car on CarFax? If so, or if not, make sure you have some sort of vehicle history that demonstrates all previous work done on the car.
• This seems obvious to most, but make sure you clean the car! There is nothing worse than getting into a car that is dirty. No one will want it. If possible, remove your personal items and any bumper stickers. This is potentially ‘their’ car, not yours.
• Take a few pictures of the car (when clean) in some nice lighting. Nice pictures sell!
Once you have completed all of the preparatory work, log into Craigslist and create a personal account. It’s a very basic website and shouldn’t take too long to understand how it works. You will have the option of using a personal email, anonymous email, phone number, etc. This is completely up to you and your comfort levels. Email is often the chosen route in order to limit people from calling you anytime of the day. Although, if this is time sensitive and you need to sell the car ASAP a phone number may allow you to make the sale a little quicker.
Next you will prepare the listing and submit it to Craigslist so that it appears on the appropriate page and category in your local area. Now its time to sit back and wait for the buyers to begin contacting you!
